I realize there were many involved in the Hines project, and we should not single out one person over the others, but I feel the need to post this.

I wondered, when the Hines ball got rolling, why Joe in GA had such a passion to help the Hines? Then, in the thread of Joe’s original post “Anybody notice the ‘Wanted, Gold Wing’ ad?”, Jim Wise posted some links to several archived threads. I had not looked at them then, but did so tonight. And remembered.

They have to do when Joe in GA’s 1200 was broke down, they had doctor bills to pay (starting to sound familiar?) and could not fix the Wing. This was the fall of 1999.

Then someone started “passing the hat” and, golly, the Wing was fixed, bills were paid, and Joe had this to say:

“You guys are the greatest... Bonnie and I are wondering if we will ever find a way to repay this out-pouring of love.
God Bless... Joe in Ga”

Well, Joe, looks like you found a way to repay. Kinda the Golden Rule in reverse: Give unto others as they have given unto you.

I know you were not “repaying a debt” when you took this on, simply passing on the love and help you had received those 3 years ago.

I kid you a lot on this board (the skirt & overgrown knife), and you kid right back (the bug creature from MIB) (still haven’t seen that movie!). I have always felt you were a good guy with a heart of gold under all that clowning. I was right.

Bonnie, give this big lug a huge hug from me!!!

Here is Jim's post, for those who missed it.
--------------------------------------------
This thread has brought back many memories from September of 1999 when the stator of Joe's 1200 went out. For those of you who were not around then I did a search, using only the keyword Bonnie and came up with the following chain of events back then. It was good to be a part of it, what you are doing now is GREAT! God Bless You All!

Joe's Original Post: http://archive.gwrra.org/wwwboard/general/10030877 .html

A thread during the collection of $$: http://archive.gwrra.org/wwwboard/general/10031041 .html

Some nice words about Jess: http://archive.gwrra.org/wwwboard/general/10039782 .html

A thread of thanks to those that helped: http://archive.gwrra.org/wwwboard/general/10031667 .html

The fallout later, WingWorld Magazine: http://archive.gwrra.org/wwwboard/general/10036977 .html

I didn't count the total posts, but our hearts were in basically the same place, only we didn't have to come up with a WHOLE MOTORCYCLE! LOL

I'd like to point out Jess Tolbert jumped on the drive to fix Joe's bike. I was proud to meet him at the Hines Wing Presentation. If you think about it, Jess was around to participate in something that his generosity started a few years ago. I know there have been others too. Another point of interest is "Poorboy" was there on Joe's old 1200 that was brought back to life by Jess with the help of other bikers.

Greg Gary, you can edit your second post here and say it's "used WITH permission!" At least permission from me, who did the search. Thank GWRRA for maintaining meticulous archives back then, something I wish they would do now on the General Boards.

In case your lives are too busy to read the links, it was sort of started by Jess Tolbirt, who offered to make a run to Georgia and provide labor for a stator replacement if Joe could come up with the parts.
This was followed by a challenge from Mac Winger (sound familiar?) to me to throw $20 at the project to match his pledge. Well, it snowballed from there. Next thing ya know, old Joe's got a new stator and on the road again!

From there, remember when Joe cleaned out his garage and almost choked Ebay with stuff? He was able to upgrade to a 1500 from just getting rid of his junk!

Then, who can forget Joe's plea's for money for the kids? He would shave his head! Well, he had to lower his expectations a bit, collected a healthy sum of money, and then to top it off, he won the door prize! His Beloved Big Blue GL1800! I shed a lot of tears of joy over that turn of events!

I'm sorry I missed the Hines Presentation, but I'm sure that I'll cross path's with many of you in the future. I'm looking forward to it!

Randy joined our MSN CyberWings Chat tonight, I would hope that some of you HWG people will follow suit and do the same...and soon!

Once you get there, we can try to get you to try our Powwow chat, even better IMHO!

Thinking of a run to Texas and NM, lottery tickets in our future if I do Gary!

As far as I'm concerned, the part I played in this Hines Wing effort is only a small part of any "repayment" due on my part.

Yes, Jess and I have shared e-mails since Saturday, and I've told him "See what YOU started?"... but he (like most of us) feels he's no hero, he just did what he thought was "RIGHT" back on Labor Day '99. He was simply offering to help a fellow winger in need.

Jess has told me that he's real proud to have been a part of this, and he does realize that if he hadn't come to Manchester 3 years ago, there's a slight possibility that this weekend's event wouldnt have taken place. (Would anyone ELSE have posted the "Anybody notice the GoldWing wanted ad" to the general board? I'd like to THINK someone else would have, but who knows? )

I was talking with our Pastor at church about all this. We were talking about how sometimes a seed is planted and you never know how long it may take for the tree to bear fruit. Well folks, THIS tree took 3 years to bear any REAL fruit, and I'm betting that it'll bear a LOT MORE in the years to come.

I'm real proud to have been a small part of this, and I got to meet a BUNCH of REAL NICE folks (face-to-face) that I may never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.

Thanks for the kind post Hick!

Joe, your "small" part was huge. To be honest with you, I never look at the classifieds unless I'm looking for something. I would like to think someone else would of seen the post, and brought it up, but I can't say for sure. YOU DID! And like I said in my little speech, "who else would of done that", and I mean it.

I think your right about how the charitable notion got started.

I think Joe is being Joe. Meek As I was taught in Bible college "Meekness is not weakness, but power under control".

As everyone knows: And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.

Joe, accept the thankfulness of us as you accepted it in the sowing years.

You and others, GWRRA did an awesome thing!

If you have something you REALLY believe in, you can't help but share it. That causes me a really long pause for reflection on applying that in my spiritual life.

The whole story of what has happened is a great illustration of sharing "good news" with others. I know it came naturally for me to share the Hines' story with many others and I'm sure it was the same for many of you.

OUR DEAREST FAMILY OF FRIENDS:
I believe Bill and I know how Joe feels about helping others since we received such a wonderful gift from many, many new friends. Since Saturday Bill and I have discussed how we could ever repay everyone for their love, support and generousity. Probably the best answer we could come up with is to be there for someone else who finds themselves in an unexpected situation.
We hated to see everyone leave as we were having such a great time visiting with all these strangers who instantly became a very important part of our lives and family. I think sometimes we all are guilty (including myself) of being in a hurry, or too tired, or........to stop and look around and see someone's pain or needs. Maybe we think if we don't see it, it doesn't exsist. Joe, (God Bless his heart of gold) saw past the "Wanted Goldwing ad", because he was in a similar situation years ago. All I asked for was for someone who might have a wing to sell carry a note for me. Joe saw it as my love for my husband and his love for Goldwings.
I've come away from this past month really (because I knew what was going on behind Bill's back) with a different perspective of life. I've always tried to be a giving person, making things for charities, etc., but now, thanks to Joe, I see the hurt and pride of those who I've given to.
It's kind of like the old saying: "You can't see the forrest for the trees".
There were many who saw through Joe's eyes or this past weekend would have never happened. I never thought of it until it was mentioned Saturday that on 9/11/2001 many lost their lives, including firemen. One year later, 11/09/2002 a fireman (Bill) was given his life back thanks to all of you kind people in the GWRRA Organization.
Once again, Thank You my heroes and I hope I can live up to a least half of how great you all are.
God Bless!
Love and Prayers,
Linda and Bill

Greg, if you saw that smiley here, I think you must be crazy! I've never seen it among the stuff available here now. When I first saw your post above it was just as it is now, no real picture.

I do kinda miss the guy though! :-O
